The CAC is not only an identification card. It also grants the card holder access – physical access to buildings and controlled spaces and virtual access to DoD computer networks and systems. Access is granted based on user permissions, making the CAC and its underlying identification technology a key element in the DoD’s physical security and cybersecurity.
